ABOUT

Professor of Epidemiology, Medicine and Global Health, University of Toronto (MS, PhD, FACC, FAHA)

His experience encompasses a unique combination of global health research, policy, training, and administration in addition to international leadership within the global health community. He is a co- author of the Institute of Medicine’s “Promoting Cardiovascular Health in the Developing World“ – a key resource document for the UN High Level Meeting on NCD Prevention and Control, 2011. He was a contributing author to the developments of UN Resolution 66 on NCD Prevention and Control.  His prior appointments include as Founding Director of Global Health at the following institutions: University of Toronto School of Public Health; the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH); and Faculty of Health Sciences at the Simon Fraser University Vancouver, BC.  He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Noncommunicable Diseases (www.ijncd.org).

He has also served as Associate Director of the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health in the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Senior Policy Advisor at the Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control, Health Canada. He served as the Secretary General of the World Hypertension League for nine years, from 2005 and instrumental to establish World Hypertension Day since 2005 on May 17th every year.

Dr. Chockalingam is passionate about global health research, particularly on NCD prevention and control in LMICs. He has established research collaborations in all six continents including China and India. His multidisciplinary research interests, beyond cardiovascular health, include household air pollution; mental health; congruency of health, agriculture and economics; and smart villages. He has published 175+ papers; served as an editorial board member and reviewer for numerous journals. He reviewed grants for funding agencies, including CIHR, NIH and the European Commission. He has organized several national and international conferences in Canada and abroad.
